IDOLATRY IS SELF DEGRADATION

There are countless verses on idolatry in the bible; certainly too many to list in this blog

post. Many books have been written and countless sermons have been preached on this

topic and the simple reason for this is that God HATES it. Worshiping other things is the

most dishonouring thing we can do in God’s sight. Nevertheless, during my devotion

time a few months ago, God revealed to me another reason why he hates all forms of

idolatry.

Genesis 1:26-27 says, Then God said, ““Let us make man in our image, after our

likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the

heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that

creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he

created him; male and female he created them.” You see, we were made in the image of

the creator himself and no other living thing shares this characteristic. We are also called

to have dominion (which means to rule) over the land and sea and everything in it.

However, generation after generation, human beings have worshiped and served the

same things God created to serve them. As God’s very own image bearers, we sell

ourselves short when we worship food (Exodus 32:4, 1 Kings 12:28), money

(Ecclesiastes 5:10, Matthew 6:24), sex (Colossians 3:5) and even human beings

(Deuteronomy 4:15-20)! Idolatry is a form of self degradation and it is insulting to God.

When describing the idolatry of the Israelites in Jeremiah 2:11 & 13 God had this to say;

"But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.- My people have

committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug

their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” It is understandable that over

time, we can become so used to the things that provide us with pleasure and comfort

and whilst they might serve a need in our lives, they are most definitely are not worthy of

our worship. There is only one who deserves our worship. The one who was, who is and

who is to come. He is our source and our springs of living water. His name is YHWH.
